Is it good enough to play today's games? I'll be playing games that came out back in 2006 and 2005, and maybe some of today's and tomorrow's games.

It's decent. You can play games from 05 and 06 fine. Today's games at medium capacity, but tomorrow's games in the low to medium range. Move up to an 8600GTS with 512 if you can.

It is a middle of the road card. If you want to run on maxed out settings go for the 8800s. You can pick both up at reasonable prices here:

Yes, it is pretty good for many games except perhaps Oblivion and Crysis. Better consider the factory overclocked version, then overclock it some more (and also your processor). You could end up w/ a quite awesome set up that could do about 11,500 marks in 3D Mark 05.
