I have an HP laptop but its too slow for me when I am doing my homework. It has an AMD processor and I heard Intel was a much faster processor, but there's so many to chose from!
I go to NAU Full time and all of my classes are online! I use my computer everyday for school work and then my husband uses it when he gets home to burn CD's. We would really like a fast computer, but dont want to go overboard since we only use it for school and everyday usage.
Any ideas on what type to get, or any websites/stores that offer cheap, but good computers?

Dell sells a really cheap computer.

They have very nice desktops for around 200-400 bucks.

Check their website www.dell.com

AMD and Intel are 2 different types of processors. They are both the same as in they make PC computers rather than Macintosh computers. The manufacturer doesn't necessarily determine the speed and just because one is AMD and one is Intel doesn't make one faster than the other. AMD processors can be just as fast as Intel processors.

Just buy a brand new computer from Dell. Buy their cheapest one. If it's new, it'll have to at least be up to today's standards. If it's up to today's standards, it will be more than enough for you and your husband's needs.

"AMD" is actually the faster processor for gaming. Intel is the faster processor for programs and applications. But its honestly only by a few miliseconds, which you cant really tell anyway. So you would be safe to go with anything. You can get a PC now days fairly cheep. Wal-Mart has great PC's for a good price. A new PC right off the shelf would suit you and your husband just fine.

I would say that go for INTEL CORE 2 DUO.
The Core 2 brand refers to a range of Intel's mobile, desktop dual- and quad-core 64-bit x86 CPUs based on the Intel Core microarchitecture, a microarchitecture that evolved from the 32-bit dual-core Yonah mobile processor. The Yonah comprised two interconnected single cores (the Pentium M branded microprocessor derivatives) coupled as a single die silicon chip (IC). The Core 2 marked a relegation of the Intel's Pentium brand to a lower-end market, and a reunification of Intel's notebook and desktop brand names, previously divided into the Pentium M and Pentium 4 lines.

For the purposes that you listed, I would check out the Dell Inspiron line of desk tops starting at $349 or notebook computers starting at $499.

You might also check Dell's Outpost website for certified refurbished/remanufactured systems. They carry the same warranty as new systems, but cost less. They are usually returned systems and may have some "cosmetic" blemishes (scratches/minor case dents) but have been checked out and/or repaired to make sure they work properly.

Gateway and HP offer similar services.

Wal-Mart carries some inexpensive Acer, Toshiba and HP computers both instore and online;

talk with your neighborhood computer nerd, and build one from scratch. (you should only drop about 300 bucks for a fair system, or up to 600 for something that will last for at least four or five years)

All other computers are very much overpriced and underpowered.

good luck

PS. Amit is incorrect, mac is the newest and easiest targets for viruses, due to miss information like he just said.
