when you watch a hd program (even if it is not on a hd channel) you will see a difference.

the source has to be hd (shot with an hd camera)

when you have an hd reciever and an hdtv. the clarity is almost on par with looking out your window.

discovery hd and hd net are probably the 2 cleanest beautiful looking picture on tv today

ps just make sure that there are the proper connections made (hdmi or component straight into your tv from the hd box)

good luck, when you see it you eill know

Usually, the biggest giveaway that the show you are watching is in HD is the show will be wide screen and not 4:3 with the black bars on the sides. Also, they sometimes will flash "HD" when comming back from commercial or at the start of the show. The difference should not be subtle but pretty dramatic as the picture should be noticably clearer.

The biggest difference (other than the 16:9 aspect ratio versus the 4:3) will be how sharp the scenes look. A complete lack of "ghosting" makes everything look much more "in focus" than any analog broadcast.
