It would have been more helpful if you had mentioned how "good" you are (i.e., total novice; beginner; intermediate; master; etc).

FWIW, you can't gain "experience" by playing against a computer. The only thing you'll gain is frustration at losing all the time, assuming it's even a half-way decent program, and that you're not in the Fisher/Spassky stratosphere!

I have a freeware chess program at home that I stopped using, because, even on the "easy" settings, I can't win to save my life (having said that, I've never been a good player, ranked somewhere in the negative five thousands!). ; )

You really need to play against humans to get the "feel" for the game, as well as feedback (good players have no objection over going over the game with you, though, usually, of course, only *after* they've beaten you! I know a Grand Master who loves the game so much, that he'll tie you to a chair to teach you to play better! Unfortunately, I'm a lousy student!). ;)

Install winboard. It is a free chess computer interface that comes with gnuchess. It is free. It is open source software, comrade.:)

go to the home page of yahoo.com and on your left there's a list of stuff click games then look for chess.

pogo.com is a good site. it is free and you can play people for practice or the pc. it also had tutorials and that helps as well. good luck
