It's hard to say. Soviet archives recorded over two million (but that's only the collectivization of agriculture). Demographic estimates suggest between 15 and 40 million, but the problem is attribution; in 1941-45, the USSR fought a brutal war against Nazi Germany, whose stated goals for the war included the enslavement of Slavs, so it is very difficult to distinguish between killings by Stalin and killings by Hitler.

Read the books by Alexander Solzhenitsyn: he was a Political prisoner of Stalin for freely speaking out against him.
His stories go into the Prison camps of the Gulag archipelago in Northern Russia. the books will floor you, you find it hand to believe but, you have to, the man won a Pulitzer for them.
Stalin was said to be the biggest killer of people since the beginning of time. He sent about 20 million of his own people into the camps along the Northern Frontier.

Probably around 20 million. Estimates vary from 7 million up to 75 million, but anything outside a range of 15-25 million is based more on propoganda than actual evidence.

I don't know how many died during WWII and how many died as a result of the purges, but I remember the number 27 million coming up in a college comparative political science class and the fact that it never really got all the bad press that Hitler did

Nobody's sure, however some estimates put it in the millions who died as a result of starvation, war, and purges (10 million russians died as a result of ww2, not all of them at the hands of axis forces)
But one figure is 20 million over all.
