The last tornado San Antonio had spawned off of hurricane gilbert. That was back in the late 80's. It did some major damage through the western side of the city. But they are rare. Just tonight on the news they said that we are close enough to Corpus Christi to have a category 2 hurricane in the city with 105 mph winds. That is if a hurricane the side of Dean would hit Corpus Christi and track up I-37. But like the weather man said, it's somewhat rare, but the possibility is there. I wouldn't worry though, because the worst weather we get is thunderstorms with flooding.

There have not been any tornado's in the metropolitan area in a long time, some were sighted last year, didn't touch down. Several have touched down in the surrounding area. Years ago one touched down and destroyed a couple houses in Somerset, TX about 20 miles southwest of San Antonio. A few years back a tornado touched down outside of Lytle, TX about eight miles from Somerset on Wisdom Road. It destroyed some mobile homes and injured a couple. There are some straight line winds that came through a year or so ago in SA, ripped a couple roofs off. As for the hurricanes SA is about 125 north of Corpus Christi. If a big storm comes directly in via CC bay SA and the area usually gets some heavy rain depending on the size of the disturbance. It gets hot and dry usually in the summer. Last year was a buger bear. This year it has been monsoon season which is totally not a norm. When it gets humid it is miserable. It won't stay cold long in the winter if it gets cold. Hope you like it. I moved, but have a place for rent in Somerset if you're looking.

Tornadoes happen, but are rare and do little damage (I had 3 in my neighborhood in different years as a kid, but they did little more than tear up a few fences.)
As for hurricanes, even when one does hit the coast near Corpus Christi or Victoria or even Brownsville, by the time the storm gets inland it is just rain. No wind, very little flooding except at low water crossings, just like any rain storm.
Understand, The Coastal bend of Texas (basically Kingsville to Victoria, that little crook in the shore) gets very few hurricanes compared with other places along the Gulf Coast. The last one that Corpus Christi got was Hurricane Brett in 1999, and it was a Cat 2 by the time it made landfall, and fell apart quickly. Claudia hit Victoria in 2003, but was little more than a tropical storm when it hit. By the time it got to the hill country it was almost nothing. The only reason the recent (this year) storms are so worrisome is just because we have had a very unusually wet season. The ground is so saturated that any extra rainfall could cause flooding. Most years, for San Antonio, hurricanes arent a big concern, its just too far inland.

Your more likely to get remnants from hurricanes, which would be heavy rain, thunder and lightening than have tornado's..but occasionally anywhere in Texas a tornado can touch down..unlikely in San Antonio..but a few years back La vernia experienced a F4 which killed several people....that was rare. Tornado's do happen in east Texas but are usually f1s which are rooftop rippers..Springtime are the bad weather months...We have had an unusual wet summer this year and cooler than the pasts...The fall and winters are really pleasant..Humidity in the summer is a nuisance and so are the mosquito's...East Texas has beautiful countryside. If your planning on San Antonio go to the north side...

SATX has rare tornados as we are protected from the north and northwest by hills and that is where the tornados track. On rare occasions one will hit here but usually it is a small effect, with minimal if any damage. As far as hurricanes, we don't generally get the brunt of the hurricane being 3 hours from the coast. The last hurricane to cause significant problems that I remember was in the 60s. Though if a hurricane hits the Gulf of Mexico we will get heavy rain, some wind and some flooding, maybe some light wind damage.

San Antonio is not known for having tornadoes because we are in a valley with the hill country area protecting us from the north and the plains protecting us from the south, but we are well known for our flash floods, or as the west texans call them, the toad stranglers. Be careful of low lying areas where there are plenty of in our city. They will keep you safe in case of tornadoes, but not in the event of a flood. So we trade our problems of the high winds of the tornadoes for flash floods. I did however see a small 2 foot dust devil on Nacodogches and Wurzbach parkway a few years ago. That was pretty cool. It just spun around making a tumbleweed out of some dead grass and when it hit the road it fell apart into a cloud of dust.
Tornadoes and high winds and flooding are something that happens as a result of hurricanes. The hurricane becomes a tropical storm inland. Hurricanes are only over open water and coastal areas.

Hurricanes normally only tear up the coastal areas where they make landfall. San Antonio is 150 miles from the coast. Tornado's are usually only in the spring and are few and far between. To answer your question, no there have not been any big hurricanes or tornado's.

LOL. Calm down. The hurricane will only be a tropical storm by the time it hits San Antonio. You won't be going through much. I live in Harlingen which is way down south texas its crazy and the boards came out from the windows at my house. And there has been some evacuations but other that its not as bad as it was a while ago.

Tornadoes are few and far between but that doesn't mean that we don't ever have them we do but not very often and nothing like around Oklahoma City we are very fortunate, I don't think that anyplace is totally safe from a tornado. I was raised in New England and we have a bad tornado come through central Massachusetts killing several folks, so I believe that we can and I know that we have had some but thank the Lord nothing really. Hurricanes are another story. we do get some of the Storm but by the time that we get it most of the wind has diminished, but we get inundated with rain.
