I know it isn't exactly scholarly, but try wikipedia, most of the time near the end of the article there are links to the sources people used to create the article. I use this method a ton when writing papers. Maybe ask you librarian at school as well, some schools are on a subscription database program to look up articles (for free) on the Internet. Check these options out as well as the obvious www.nintento.com site for their own history.
