My first thought is that it won't happen.

This seems like a case of being blinded by wins. It's nice that he has 15 wins, but that's due more to the Sox offense than to Wakefield's pitching. His 4.35 ERA is about 2 runs more per game than Danny Haren, who has two fewer wins on a much worse team.

I'm not always for giving the Cy Young to the top ERA guy, but I would never give it to someone with a 4+ ERA when there are several players at 3.50 or under. Wakefield is having a decent season, but in no way is he worthy of the Cy Young award.

RE: Swingman258...

Beckett I will agree... same with Carmona, but Verlander has been hurt and is inconsistent when he has pitched. I would like to say Hernandez of Seattle, but I think he is at least a year away yet. Wakefield does have a shot... but like Jim Bouton wrote in his book 'Ball Four' - 'The knuckleball is a hard pitch to throw let alone control'. Wakefield is lucky in that he has Mirabelli as his personal catcher. Cash (catching last night against the DRays) had obvious issues trying to corral the knuckler. If the DRays had been a little more patient, they could have taken advantage of the past balls and wild pitches.

no. as much as people would enjoy to see a knuckelballer win the cy young, it wont happen. at least not this year. the thing about wakefield is that if he wins he pitches an absolute gem, but onn the other hand, if he loses he gets tagged. a cy young award winner has to be consistent even on bad days, and wake gets rocked to many times a year to ever win a cy young.

Wakefield? Snowball's chance in hell, sorry.

How about last year's Cy Young - Johan Santana?
Sure he only has 13 wins to his 9 losses but look at who he plays for! Minnesota has one of the lowest scoring offenses in the league - including the National League! In all 9 of his losses, his team has averaged 2 runs of support. Only once has his team scored as many as 4 runs in one of his losses. On top of that look at his other numbers:

2.88 ERA
191 K's
175 IP
39 BB
.214 BAA
1.01 WHIP

Not very many pitchers are going to aquire numbers like that. Some may have more wins, some may have lower ERA's but nobody is going to have all around better numbers.

Tim Wakefield shouldn't be in this discussion. There's Beckett, Santana, Halladay, Wang , Sabathia

i can hear the chants now:
bullllllllllll-shitttttttttttttt! bullllllllllllllllll-shitttttttttttttt!
i think carl pavano is more deserving of the cy young than tim wakefield.

hey i think i remember that name, wakefield, isn't that the guy that gave up the aaron boone walkoff in the 2003 alcs against the yankees?

I am a huge Wake fan but I don't think you can Cy Young a pitcher with 10 or more losses. Would love to see Beckett finish strong and take the hardware.

It would be cool, but Becket is too good to looked over. Santana, Putz, CC, to many others with name recognition that always plays into the mix.

Sorry, I wish it could be true.
