I have an 81/2 year old son. Am I allowed to have a deadly weapon in my house?
It is a Masaii spear from Africa. Long and pointy, it probably could kill someone. My son never plays with it. My mother told me I need to get rid of it. I want to know what you think. She said "I could be reported". I had it in the living room but now it is in my bedroom. I will probably get rid of it but I want some feedback please.

Your Mom is just worried about her grandsons safety. I have an 8 1/2 yr. old son, as well. I suggest you get a nice display case for it (with a lock) and hang it high on the wall. Just for safety reasons. If, God forbid, something were to happen, you wouldn't be able to forgive yourself.

all guns are dangerous, but then again, so isn't a pencil...
go to any police station and ask for a safety lock, there free and at least the child can't shoot it once it's on there. the police won't ask any questions, there aim is safety... i am guessing that it has a spear attatched to it also? remove it or find a way to secure it, i am sure you wouldn't want this child harmed in anyway, remember- kids have a way of touching things even when they know there dangerous and that they shouldn't... be smart, be safe, if your thinking of getting rid of it, then just do it because you can't turn back the hands of time...

Interesting question-
I can't see little Billy hurting himself easily with a long spear...
someone else, maybe while playing with it. Is there no place that you can safely store it?
Is this an antique or just a decoration? Can you gently remove the blade from the spear ?
If all else fails, I guess that you'll have to send it to me for
safekeeping.

A weapon must be secured in a locked cabinet, whether it is a gun, knife or spear. The child should have no knowledge of where the key is kept.

Yes it's not a good thing. The only way you can have it is if it's locked. Either lock it away, or buy a locking display case!

Just keep it somewhere your son can't get it, like locked in a display case. Then you shouldn't get in trouble.

I think if CPS found out about it, you could get in trouble for having it where the kid could be harmed with it. But it would be a stretch.

Families that hunt have guns, and 8 year-olds are taught to use them. I don't think having it is illegal, as long as it is not available to the kid.

Many parents can and do.. According to John Walsh of the TV show COPS explained, there are 3000 children killed by hand guns EVERY year in the US. Don't try to make it 3001 PLEASE !
