I'm 30 weeks pregnant and I have had heartburn since yesterday. I have tried the Tums, Milk, Bread, Pudding, Jello and nothing seems to work.
What else can I do? Also what does having heartburn mean while pregnant? Something wrong?
This is my first baby so any advice would help.

I feel the same way as you. I am almost 38 weeks and last night was the first night I have had heart burn. It is god awful! :) But I read in a couple of books that not eating a couple hours before bed helps. As well as limiting carbonated drinks and spicy foods should be a fix to the problem. As odd as it sounds, I was told to try getting on all fours and just relaxing so the baby is pushing upward on you and it helped a lot. It wasnt a permanent fix, but it made me feel better!

Oh, and an old wives tale was that the more heartburn you have the more hair your baby will have. I dont know how true that is, but lets hope for babies with heads full of hair!!!

I tried tums for awhile, then a cold glass of milk....eventually I figured out what was giving me heartburn all the time (Ittalian food) and I had to cut out anything with tomatoes in it. With the amount of heartburn I've had this pregnancy...my baby better come out with a fro!!!! lol. I NEVER had heartburn until I got pregnant. Hope this helps! Good luck!

I had to add my response to Tonia.. this is actually TRUE per a John Hopkins study... There IS a correlation between heartburn and the baby's hair...http://www.nytimes.com/2007/02/20/health/20really.htmlex=1329627600&en=830ce6a9af6926a9&ei=5124&partner=permalink&exprod=permalink

Oh and I have had heartburn for the past couple months, comes and goes. I eat Tums like candy and they seem to help for a lil while. I have also been told we can take Tagament.

I am 25 weeks and my heartburn is just terrible. I get it after EVERY single thing I eat or drink. All I can do is keep some Tums on hand. I was also told that chewing gum can help alleviate it too, and that seems to work for me. One of my books told me that the heartburn and indigestion is caused by the position of the baby pushing up on your stomach and other digestive organs.

it is completly normal. The baby is probably positioned in a spot where it is causing acid backup. Try staying away from spicy foods, carbonated things...stuff like that. Also, eating some crackers will absorb some of the acid.

Old wives tale about heartburn....
if you have heartburn while pregnant often, your child will be born with a full head of hair

No worries, heartburn is completely normal in pregnancy. I had it something fierce when I was pregnant with my daughter. My doctor finally put me on 150 mg of Zantac just so that I could get through. Maybe ask your doctor about it, he/she could either write you a prescription, or you could just take an over the counter version. I took 75 mg twice a day (for the remainder of the pregnancy), and the heartburn was completely gone after about 3 days. Definately discuss it with your doctor before taking anything though. There may be a reason as to why taking it isn't right for you, you know? (It's not a sign that your baby has hair, either! My daughter was born bald, and at 9 1/2 months, she still barely has any hair! lol)
Good luck and congrats on your pregnancy!!! Take Care!!

i wasn't able to stop the heartburn and it can get really bad, like disturbing your sleep, so when you lay down always have your head up some, only drink water and milk. heartburn means your little one is going to have some hair when the baby comes.

Call your doctor for advice. Heartburn is common during pregnancy, because the baby is pressing against your stomach. That causes acid to go up your esophogus. You are totally normal.

I got a prescription from my doc for Protonix when the tums just wasn't doing it for me...the Protonix has been very effective, and is considered safe in pregnancy.

The heartburn and acid reflux just happens because your stomach is getting squished in funny ways. It will probably go away after you have your baby.
