Atlantis is the most famous of the mythical islands. The story was first told by Plato, in his Critias.

Most scholars believe that the story of Atlantis was a fiction created by Plato that was merely a story created to illustrate some point. Nevertheless, the legend has seemed to have captured people's imagination. There have been dozens of theories about where the "real" Atlantis was. These theories have ranged from sunken islands in the Atlantic, to Cuba, to Thera, as well as many others. Many books have been written with "evidence" to "prove" the real location of Atlantis.

Psiexploration got it right.

If I might add a little information: It is possible that Plato might have had some basis for his story in other legends, but nothing definite. For one thing, Plato describes the "Island" of Atlantis as being a rather large continent, large enough that the entire Atlantic Ocean would have been displaced (thereby flooding Athens and Egypt, both of which play an important role in the story).

The "huge cut stones" that Spirit G mentioned do actually exist, however they are neither the stone that one would associate with a great civilization, nor are they cut. These are giant blocks of sand; denser than normal sand but not quite sandstone (at least not yet). It is a result of particular climates in the region and new "stone blocks" are still being formed on the beaches near where these blocks are found. Indeed, these blocks used to BE beaches that, due to erosion, sunk into the water. As for the "cut" appearance of the blocks, it is a natural result of sand being wet then drying out; you can notice this effect on any bit of dirt or sand that was wet but is now dry. The only difference is that the process happened repeatedly under specific circumstances over great periods of time.

atlantis was first mentioned by the greek philosopher plato: it is likely that it was a fairy story greek parents told to their children.

atlantis is just as real as the gingerbread house in the forest where hansel and gretel meet the hungry witch, or the house of the three bears which goldilocks visited, or duloc (where shrek now lives).

even at hogwarts everyone knows atlantis is just a made-up story.

Only a couple of other ancient Greek writers mention this mythical civilisation -- but they are just quoting Plato.

To confuse matters, the ordinary Greek word "Atlanteans" was used for the Phoenician colonies (Carthage and the rest) of North-West Africa. So-called since they dwelt about the Atlas Mountains. The Ocean was later given the same name, because it lay beyond the Atlas Mountains.
