I am worried about any type of infringement. Do I need to obtain permission from the Author? Serious answers only please

Would I personally (or with a lawyer) be able to obtain the rights myself directly from the author? These books (or collection of short stories) were written over 20 years ago

I do not know this for certain, but I believe you can write a spec script and pitch your idea and if they like it they can obtain the rights. However, generally the author of the books is approached first, the rights are optioned, then the script is written.

You can write it but you cannot publish it. If you publish or sell the work you will need the authors' permission.

Don't put yourself in a bad situation. You would definitely need permission. Best (and only thing to do in my mind) thing to do is talk with an entertainment lawyer.

If you're doing it just for your own private enjoyment, no.

If your intent is to publish or sell this work, yes, absolutely, you need permission.

Just write it and worry about getting the rights later.
