You're sooo lucky to be living in LA! Anyways, you really need an agent if you want to get into acting seriously (p.s: make sure ur agent is good, they should never ask for money unless it comes out of ur paycheck!)

Asking this sort of question, you must be a beginning actor. Best thing for you to do is go to actorsaccess.com and lacasting.com Both of these sites have listings for local theatre, small commercials, and student films - along with some listings for larger films but those usually are requiring SAG members only or are for really unique characters. Use these castings to get your feet wet for not only the audition process, but to build your resume.
Being in LA means you are in the most competitive acting market in the world. You absolutely have to have good credits on your resume. and great training - which LA has a tremendous number of great teachers/coaches. So go slow, build the resume and get your training. Once you've done this, I think you may be answer questions on this board instead of asking them.

For speaking roles you need an agent. For extra roles you better be in LA or NYC and join Central Casting.
