My son was thought to have a mild lactose intolerance when he was about a week old when he was having trouble digesting breast milk, and formula milk. We put him on soya and he was fine for a while, then we tried him back on normal formula and he has seemed ok. Now he has just turned one and we put him on cows milk. He seemed to have trouble digesting and was very fussy. He had never slept through the night and he seemed to get even worse with this cows milk. We put him on goats milk about 2 weeks ago, and he is like a different baby, he sleeps through, he's so content its amazing. But he seems fine with ordinary cheese, butter and yogurt etc. Could he still have a lactose intolerance? I thought this would mean he struggled with all dairy, but since being on goats he is the best he has ever been, and is so peaceful all the time, i cant work it out!!

Because cheese, yogurt and butter are processed, they contain less lactose than milk. Check with your doctor and have the tests done for lactose intolerance if you are curious, but when I was diagnosed my doc just had me avoid certain products and see how I felt afterwards. Kind of a trial and error process like you described.

Stick with the goat's milk and be sure to give him vitamins since it does not contain things like vitamin D.

In the PF days (before commercial formula), there were some kids that just couldn't drink cow's milk until they were 3 or 4 years old. Some never can. I'd stick with the goat's milk for him since he's doing so well. Don't mess with success!

It is probably a lactose intolerance. My son became lactose intolerant at 15 months old and if I drank milk, it would bother him also.

We had this with our daughter when she turned one. It was her first try of formula milk and she had awful diarrhoea all the time. We changed to soya for a while, then tried again with the cows milk. And she was fine! It must have lasted a month. Now she is 2 and has never had a problem with it again.

I have had problems with drinking milk since i was a baby. I can have any other dairy products and be fine. I can also use milk for cereal and chocolate milk with no problems. The only time I have problems with milk is if i try to drink it plain, then it tears my stomach up. It's weird I know but after a while you get use to what you can and cant feed your child when they have a problem like this.

Have you discussed this with your health visitor/gp? my daughter had lactose intolerance for her first year and had to have dairy free milk on prescription and even now aged 3 too much dairy makes her ill (specifically full fat milk). If it is an intolerance it can be checked properly which is what my daughter had done and thankfully came back negative, she is just overly sensitive to such things.

You can be lactose intolerant to just milk. I can eat yogurt, cheese and ice cream but not drink milk and be OK.

My daughter could handle all other dairy except milk also.

I used Lactaid whole milk and slowly mixed regular whole milk in with it until she could handle a full glass of regular milk. It took about 2 months to transition her this way.
