Galaxies are composed of 100's of BILLIONS of stars, some bigger, some smaller. Our star is rather average,so each galaxy would have billions of stars like our sun

Some of what you see as "stars"are themselves entire galaxies, with hundreds of billions of stars,so far away that they appear as a single point of light

Like many people you are confusing the galaxy with the solar system.

The solar system is the Sun and all the planets, asteroids, meteoroids, and comets orbiting it.

The galaxy is a collection of billions of Suns. Each star you see in the night sky is just another Sun in our galaxy, but they are so far away that they look like tiny, dim dots. Each of those stars may be the center of its own solar system. The dim cloudy looking band of light, called the Milky Way, that stretches across the whole sky is the rest of the stars in the galaxy, but so far away that we cannot see them individually. By the way, most people today have never seen the Milky Way because it is too dim to see from the city with all the streetlights making the sky bright. But from a dark country location, where there are so many stars visible that you cannot believe your eyes, the Milky Way is easy to see.

our galaxy could do just fine without our sun; it's our solar system that would be a lot different without it. there are plenty of solar systems in our galaxy with different aged and sized stars....
