I internally struggle over whether i like happy or sad endings because on the one hand nearly every story ends happily because people tend to like that, so it seems cliched and boring to me. on the other hand a sad ending is sort of different but depressing, is the depression of a sad ending worth the originality?

Well, I love bittersweet endings. I think those are a nice mix of sad and happy endings. But in general, it really depends on my mood. Sometimes I just want to read and incredibly depressing story, whereas sometimes I want an uplifting one.

Sometimes. My favorite series (His Dark Materials) ends with the two main characters never being able to see one another again and that was a very depressing ending, but I think it made the book better because it brought a different emotion and it would have been very sappy if the two characters were able to stay together. It really depends on the story though I think. I tend to like happy endings but as you said that's just the way most books end. If the book is written well a sad ending can be very enjoyable and make the book out of the ordinary and more realistic, since in life there isn't always a happy ending.

Let me answer your question with another question: what keeps us turning the pages? I think if I knew beforehand a story was going to have a sad ending, I would probably approach it the same way I would if I knew it would the story with a happy ending. But I also don't see it as depression. I see it more as realism. We can relate to realism much more easily than we do to fantasy (and happy endings). Things we can relate to have much more powerful meaning to us as individuals.

Sad to say, but sad endings are always more remarkable and sentimental... Like Romeo & Juliet, or Titanic.
