The best way to improve vocabulary is to read. As you come across words that you are not familiar with, look up the definition. This is truly one of the best ways to expose yourself to increased vocabulary and RETAIN it.

Read books and Journals and use a thesaurus or dictionary to help with words you cannot figure out. The only way you will retian the new vocabulary is if you see it in context. Try using the words with a friend who knows you are trying to develop your vocab (so they don't think you are weird). Lastly, try to relate the meanings and words to things you already know, you need several exposures to new materiial before it becomes long term knowledge. Goodluck, you will do fine.

Get a list of the 100's (1000's) of recommended GRE words and study them on flash cards. The GRE uses the "unabridged" definitions of many words which can be very difficult to learn.
Many words that we routinely use, are actually a mis-use of the word. The GRE tests on the true definitions of words, which can often seem archaic.

Read. Readers Digest has a section called Improve Your Vocabulary. It has worked wonders for me. I am no longer ambivalent to others needs.

Read a thesaurus (I'm not joking). Just pick one up and check it. You'll retain a lot of information. It worked for me.

Read different books. You'll be entertained while learning different words. Or you could just study the dictionary.
