You can become an animal trainer or work with a rescue group. These are just an idea, there are so many jobs out there that help animals. BTW I know what you mean about the vet thing. I have spoken with vets about that, and they say that it is the best feeling in the world to help a sick animal.

you can volunteer at the humane society or ASPCA, the nature center.
you can hire in at a vets off as an assistant.
volunteer to foster animals until they can find permanent homes. you can do this through humane society/ASPCA, the pound, shelters, or rescue groups.
most cases in order to work at the zoo WITH the animals you need to have training with the type of animal you want to work with. you have to really educated on diets, anatomy, care, habitats, etc.
we have a group here that works with a no kill shelter who, from donations, go around inner city neighbor hoods and make sure that dogs are fed, have proper housing (especially in the summer and winter), even if they provide the dog houses, and make sure that dogs have plenty of water in the summer on super hot days. most people have a problem with them when they first show up until they realize that they are there to help and educate them.

You could work at PetSmart, to volunteer at a local animal shelter and help take care of them. Like feeding them, playing with them and making sure they go to good people. You could work as an animal handler at a zoo or a trainer.
