People are living longer in part due to advances in medicine and taking better care of themselves. The possible consequences lie in a population explosion. If the population continues to grow at an exponential rate we will reach about 20 billion by the year 2050. That could lead to more hunger and poverty as we may not have the resources to feed everyone, and more pollution due to the extra strain on the environment. Hope this helps.

I think people are living longer because of the advancement in medicine and people are taking better care of themselves (diet, exercise, vitamins, etc.) The consequences would be overpopulation for society but not sure about the individual. I want to live longer as long as I am in good health.

To say that people are living longer is a myth. It's true that the average lifespan is increasing and more people are achieving old age but life expectancy in normal healthy humans is roughly the same as it was 50 years ago. Since then, however, better health care, improved environment, reduction in smoking and better awareness of our bodies have meant that fewer people are dying prematurely. Also the eradication of many diseases such as polio and the treatment of things like tuberculosis have now removed them from being killer diseases. Increase in aid to third and second countries has also increased thus treating relatively simple ailments like measles that, two decades ago, would have been a killer. There is also improved education in farming and irrigation methods. Life expectancy for a western male is about 75 years and for a female about 80.

1. Early detection and treatment of more diseases and conditions that otherwise shorten the life span
2. Advance technology and medicine where more sophisticated tests, operations, procedures, and medicines are available that increase the survival rate.
3. Lower infant and child mortality rates, also due to advances in medical and health care and education.
4. Refrigeration, preservation and sanitation for food and water that reduces the spread of disease.
5. Access to housing, transportation and "mass production"/shipping of food resources that has reduced famine, especially in democratic countries
Trends:
1. Social security system is paying out to more people for longer periods of time
2. Greater need for elderly care and also specialized care for other disabilities or illnesses that previously resulted in death
3. Could be related to higher rates of divorce and remarriage, if people are living longer and thus do not necessarily stay married to the same person for life
4. As the earth is sustaining a greater population at any time, there is greater need to organize efficient means of housing, transportation, energy and fuel, work production and economic balance.
5. In order to maintain civilized society, government representation and public services must diversify to reflect and protect the interest of growing numbers of different groups. Instead of just one central government body, as in China, the larger populations would necessitate delegation of authority to more localized governing bodies still connected to one central authority. So this might necessitate mandatory education in civics, conflict resolution, and financial/government management in order to handle the growing populations on both a local and global scale.

Intro: Are people living longer?
1st bit: Why? Better medicine. Better Diet. Better invasive medicine i.e. surgery especially for accidents. Better preventative medicine.
2nd bit: What does this mean? Pensions problems. People need to work longer, have 2 careers. Not enough nurses. Strain on Medicare etc. Decisions need to be made about at what age operations and treatments should be stopped.
Conclusion Is it a good thing?

People are living longer nowadays because of advancements in science, technology, and chemistry. For example, science has shown that we should not come in contact with mercury because it can be harmful to our body. However, long before this was proven, students were often given globs of mercury to play with. Technology has given us better medical equipment, better developed safety options, as well as healthier ways of cleaning out food. Chemistry has allowed crops to grow where they could have not before, increasing the amount of food that goes on everyone's plate.
Society continues to grow as a result of this; we make more advancements every day, and as a result the community we live in also grows. And the people that live in these communities also grow; we develop healthier lifestyles and live longer than we did in the past.
Hope this helps. Good luck with your essay ;)
