Assuming you have the timing gears installed on the crankshaft and camshaft (they will only fit one way) you rotate the engine so that the little "dots" or "lines" stamped into the gears are lined up with the cranskshaft gear reference "dot" is at twelve o'clock or straight up and the camshaft gear "dot" is at six o'clock or straight down.

Of course you do this before the chain is on it and you kind of set it (eyeball it) and then loop the chain on the gears and then put the bolts in the camshaft gear and torque them down. As long as the two dots are nearly perfectly lined up (crankshaft dot at at 12 and camsgaft dot at 6) you can't go wrong.

It isn't that difficult to rotate the engine by hand but if you have trouble you can use the crankshaft harmonic balancer bolt and a wrench to turn the engne to line up the crank gear timing mark.

Good Luck!

If you dont have the know how go to the library or book store and get a repair manual that covers your make and model of whatever your working on.That will have photos in it and tell you how to install the timing gears and chain.
