Because they didn't learn in 2004 from the mistakes of 2000. The very idea of going far enough left and pandering to 'special interest groups' to garner enough votes to win the party nomination almost certainly precludes a win in November.
The reason they keep losing the big one is the alienation of what used to be their power base, the Solid South. Many southern Democrats are Conservative Democrats. That means they vote conservative first and Democrat second. If the Republican candidate is seen by them as being more conservative then the Democrat, they vote Republican.
There are many states in the south who still have Democrat majorities in their legislature and the majority of voters will say they are Democrats, who have voted for Republicans for President.
The bottom line is how can Democrats call themselves "the party of the common man" when they don't pay attention to the common man?

It's not about making mistakes. It's about winning and doing what they can to win. This country has almost went to ish in a hand basket. I don't know about you, but if Americans don't come out of the government induced coma they are in we are no longer going to control our own government that is SUPPOSED to be working FOR US. Each election we are promised many things, and get none of them. The only President to help even a little was impeached for getting his lollipop sucked on and the President that we have now has lied, and Gods know what else to the People of this Nation and still stands on his podium. A hundred years ago the American people would have thrown him out on his **** and took back every right that he has taken from us. Americans have grown lax and lazy believing that our government is only doing what is best for us. THEY ARE NOT!!! Too much government brings dictatorship.
At this point we don't need to be worrying about getting a Democrat up in the Presidents seat. We need to get someone up there that actually believes in the Constitution and LESS GOVERNMENT. I'm not voting for any Democrat cause none of them have MY interests or my CHILDS interests at heart. Ron Paul all the way.

Yeah! And they always fail to notice that the clear majority wants war! WAR!!!
When you look at federal policies, we know we win every time:
War: Good problem-solving technique!
Abortion: Even the hardest campaigning just limited a little!
Death Penalty: States may say it's wrong, but the Fed says it can be ok in some states if they like it!
Health care: HEY! Profits ALWAYS matter more than human lives! So shut up about a national health care system!
Environment: WHAT? Who cares!? Local pollution got you down? So move! Nobody forced you to buy that stinky home!
Foreign policy: Respect? Bah! Who needs that?! And so what if China happens to have some child slaves? Big deal! It's all going to trickle over to the pockets of... Well, the next thing you know and they'll be spoiled brat child laborers with things like lunch breaks!
Hate-mongering: Good! GOOD!!!
Fear-mongering: Awesome! So righteous! Best management practice is to let them know the whip is right there to scourge them too!
Corruption: Everyone knows now that this is what pays best!
Yes, my friends, we get the government we deserve and the fact of the matter is WE'RE ORCS!!!!

They don't have a candidate yet. What do the following have in common: Goldwater, Humphrey, McGovern, Mondale, Dole, Gore, and Kerry? They are (were) Senators who ran for president since 1964 and they have all lost. Clinton and Obama are Senators and Edwards was a Senator. In the same span Carter, Reagan, Clinton, and W. Bush were all governors who won the presidency. I hope the trend continues.

I've been studying the pathology exhibited behind this type of behavior for years now and have finally identified the root cause of their inevitable true to form disconnect from reality.
Like their constituents, party leaders actually think they can 'talk' everything into reality by simply repeating what they wish were true often enough.
I've labeled it the 'myna complex.'

I don't know. both sides are actually tip-toeing around many issues - I do think now more candidates are starting to get firmer on issues than they were a few months ago.
the only ones who suck it up and committ to something on either side are the ones people don't know about and don't get enough money. so maybe the ones who don't do anything but say what they think people want to hear actually know what they are doing.

And what is the cohesive platform from the Republicans—another anti-gay marriage amendment? Or maybe they’ll propose another anti-flag burning amendment.
The American people are seeing more relevant proposals coming the Democrats than the Republicans are even thinking about. I think the Republicans have just about exhausted all the emotionally charged, yet totally irrelevant, issues that exist.

Just remember. 2008 will spell the end of the Democratic party. It's pretty much a done deal. Low approval ratings, lack of viable candidates will spell the end of this party.
Good riddance.

I think the bigger problem is having too many major candidates in these debates being up on one another and walking away with millions in contributions, when a serious candidate isn't getting attention or money.
