Sleep is an individual issue but there are keys to "sleep hygiene which makes getting a good nights sleep more likely.
1. Pick a reasonable bed time. Going to bed too early will only make you toss and turn and try to get to sleep when you are not ready.
2. Do not ever use the bed for any activity other than sleep and partner relations. Reading or watching TV in bed only trains your mind to stay awake while lying in bed.
3. When ready to sleep, go to a darkened room with no distractions. (though some people find peaceful music to be an aid in sleeping and relaxation, this does not mean metal rock, rap or heavy classical)
4. If you have spent 20 minutes in bed and been unable to fall asleep, get out of bed and go to another room and perform some peaceful activity until you feel drowsy.
5. Avoid caffiene use after 5 pm.
Sleep medications available over the counter often result in a hangover effect and drowsiness the next day. Try melatonin available at the chemist or a health supplement store. Start with 5mg and then take 2-5 mg every 30 minutes until sleep occurs. Do not exceed 30 mg in 24 hours.
If these do not help see your GP and discuss your sleep issues. They can prescribe a short acting sleep medication like sonata, ambien or lunesta for sleep, these work for about 4-6 hours and have minimal hangover effects.
If you continue having problems, try to find someone who can train you in biofeedback, this form of relaxation therapy is good for inducing sleep as well as relieving pain without. medications.

Good sleep is a biochemical reaction in the body that is directly handled by brain chemistry. If your brain chemistry isn't behaving properly, then you might need some help. However, there is alot that can be accomplished by meditation, mental exercises designed to help relaxation, etc. That's why some people get good benefits out of guided meditation tapes and relaxing music--because it turns on the right brain chemicals for total relaxation. Also, the mind can be trained--so you can use a specific sound (ocean waves, river sounds, chimes, etc) or scent (incense, candles, etc) to lull yourself to sleep. If these things don't work, look to your diet and see if you are taking in stimulants of any kind within 2-4 hrs of trying to sleep. This can cause problems for some people.
One strong key--do NOT take work to bed! Even reading in bed trains the brain that reading is a sleepy-time activity so when you read anything from that point on it can make you tired. Just remember, the brain and body are trainable--so if you've trained them to be an insomniac, it can take some time to train them otherwise. So be patient with yourself and keep trying!

Sleep in complete darkness or as close as possible. If there is even the tiniest bit of light in the room it can disrupt your circadian rhythm and your pineal gland's production of melatonin and seratonin. There also should be as little light in the bathroom as possible if you get up in the middle of the night. Please whatever you do, keep the light off when you go to the bathroom at night. As soon as you turn on that light you will for that night immediately cease all production of the important sleep aid melatonin.
No TV right before bed. Even better, get the TV out of the bedroom or even out of the house, completely. It is too stimulating to the brain and it will take longer to fall asleep. Also disruptive of pineal gland function for the same reason as above.

Nothing is more frustrating than not being able to sleep. Tossing and turning. Your mind is racing, going over everything that happened today. ..

Try having sex just before gong to sleep. It works for me when i cant sleep.

also a nice warm milky drink, a soak in the bath maybe using essential oils and lavendar bath oil and a nice fresh bed :)
