They failed because bad legislation was vetoed by a President who has a more realistic outlook on what the US needs than they do. Their efforts were so weak that a democratic president might have vetoed their work also. With leadership like Reid and Pelosi they were doomed from the start. Those two will be looking for work after the next election.

Because the obstructionist Republicans are blocking every attempt by the dems to fix the mess that they left behind.
The republicans would hate to see any party be succesful as that would further highlight their disasterous and failed policies.
Most Americans see right through them - if you think 2006 was a slapdown wait until 2008 when enough will finaly be enough and the rest of them are shown the door!

hmmmm.....the GOP controlled "do nothing" congress (2002-2006) managed to eek out two elections before being tossed out by voters.
Although I am singularly unimpressed with the job that the Dem controlled congress is doing, they are still doing a better job than the last congress did.
If nothing else, at least Congressional oversight of the Oval office returned after a 4 year hiatus, congressional earmarks have decreased, and there is a slow but steady movement to get out of the fiasco known as Iraq.

Because they don't have a broad enough majority to override bush-head's vetoes. They still have made a bit of progress. They increased the minimum wage and the amount of money available for students in the Pell grant. Their other initiatives have been sat on though, even perfectly sensible ones like a ban on mercury in children's vaccinations linked to autism and other disorders.

Because Joseph Goebbels, it takes a 2/3 majority to override a Nazi president.
At 'THIS' point it is only a 1 vote advantage. But don't dishearten, 2008 is on the way!
