A five pointed shape is traditional for military forts that had to withstand direct assault (as opposed to artillery assaults) because, if you build gun points (turrets, etc.) at the points, you can look along the walls and shoot people at the walls without sticking out too far. A four sided fort requires the corner posts to stick out further to be able to look along the walls. If you look at plans of forts like West Point, you will find the pattern.
I also think that there was a legend that the 5 sides memorialized the 5 aspects of the military Army, Navy, Marines, Coast Guard, Air Corps/Force.
