I feel the thumbs down on this one. lol
Yes, I do. People don't get paid to chat with friends on IM. I don't know how people get away with being on Yahoo while at work. They are truly gifted.

Depends entirely on the job itself... and the responsiblity of the employee... some jobs have long 'down' times... others require the employee to keep sharp or alert with short time outs throughout the day.
Me? When I'm doing web edits or spreadsheet reports I need to step away or I go bug eyed and snappy. Also any contacts I have throughout the day are fully prepared to be ignored at any point cause they know I'm at work. IM'ing is more flexible to this than personal phone calls or office chat.
That said.. I also have co workers who take advantage of it and dump work loads on others so they have more 'chat' time. That's just ignorant. Blocking them from IM won't solve that problem though... they're the type who will find another way to slag the dog.

It depends entirely on whether your JOB (what you get paid to do!) requires access to the IM. If not, then yes, they are within their rights to see that their employees do NOT waste time on something that they are not being paid to do.
Yeah, I'm old...and I'm old school. You pay me, you own me, for those 8 hours. You CAN tell me what to do if you're the boss.

Mine does and I can understand why. They used to block Y!A so I was surprised when they withdrew the block.

It depends. Many workers neglect their work so they can be chatting on IM endlessly. So yeah, they should. There's always Y!A anyways.
