It's the way they're spelt in the English language as opposed the the American dialect. Contrary to all the idiots on answers who think they're being clever - neither version is incorrect, they're just variations according to dialect. What's important is that you're consistent - you use either British English or American English and stick to it. On a purely childish note, you may realise that it is called the ENGLISH language. It was ours first and we'll spell it however we bloody well like.

I t was like that originally before one Noah Webster (He of the dictionary fame) decided that American's needed a seperate written English language to distance themselves from Britain (1776 and all that. I'm Irish, I don't give a whatever.)

You see we sound posh when we speak the queens English.
Also:
Those extra letters are put there to make English spelling impossible to learn for all but the most intellegent
It sorts out the educated from the rest.

I think you'll find we spelt the words correctly and when you left Great Britain in search of lands far away you forgot to take a dictionary with you so you made it up to the best of your memory. Well done for trying though -we think not much less of you for it

Because Americans are too lazy to put the U's in. By missing out the U's it gives them more time to sit in Burger King, Macdonalds, and Starbucks eating large portions of food.

It's because, the American psyche is devoted to the quick and easy, and removing those letters didn't affect the word itself.
