I researched the website, and I was amazed at how many famous success stories there were. I decided that I would sign up for it. I googled how much it would cost, and I saw so many websites saying that it's a fraud. Is it really? And if it is, are there any real acting schools that I could sign up for around the Pennsylvania area? Please and thank you!! =)

Do I say NO?

Go to RipOffReport.com and type in John Robert Powers and see what pops up.

If you want to waste your money on mediocre at best classes, then by all means go. Not to mention all the other things they try to get you to pay for once you join. They reel you in with false promises. You should also look at how many of those famous faces have actually sued them because they were not discovered through JRP... please. They've been sued by the estates of Lucille Ball, Heather Locklear, James Dean, etc. for making false claims and using their likeness. http://www.2nd-tier.com/showfax_bbs/index.cgi?noframes;read=4985

As for real classes, start at your local theatres, colleges, etc. See what they have available and go from there. Investigate them and make sure that you like what they have to offer before signing up.

You can also see if your state has a film alliance / commission / society or whatever your state calls theirs (some have more than one). Sometimes they post information for local actors such as class info. Just do a search for Pennsylvania film and if you don't get much from that, add one of the key words above.

Good luck!

Added: They are not real agents. Legit agents can only take 10% of your pay for a SAG contract, 20% for print. I've heard some blindingly happy JRP customers say that they got a job through them and JRP only took 50% of their pay! Outright ripoff because these people don't know any better and those so called jobs didn't come close to paying them back the thousands they spent on classes, conventions, contests, and what not. However this is America. It is your right to get ripped off if you so choose.

No. No. No. Do NOT use them. First and foremost, this is a modelling school. Don't trust any school that makes you sign a contract and pay them outrageous fees. JRP is awful! A friend of mine got roped into them, and she never got a job and was out several hundred dollars. Quite honestly, you generally can't audition for those shows unless you live in the area in which they are shot. And then, you can only get those auditions if you have an actual agent and TONS of experience. Make sure that you do as many local theatre plays as possible. Look under "talent agents" in the yellow pages, and have a parent (and possibly a lawyer) go talk to them with you. You interview THEM. Look for acting schools in your area. Just because they have several locations does not mean they are any good. Since you want to be an actress, you probably have actor friends--ask around about good places to take classes. If your school has a theater program, enroll in that. Experience is key if you want to A) get an audition and B) get cast. There are many directors/producers who will not cast you simply based on lack of experience.

It's not a fraud, it's a school/agency. They cannot guarantee you work and do not claim to guarantee you work. However if you look like you could get local regional work they will also act as an agency for you, but not everyone is eligible for this part of it. However if you're going solely for the school part of it, then anyone can pay for classes and go. They will evaluate you in an interview and tell you what you can expect. I've known people that they told will never get out of the town in modeling but the person chose to take classes anyways. They do teach you things you should know and it's worth going. But it's not likely you're going to be a superstar just because you went to John Robert Powers. They are more of a springboard to the business (if you have talent). You would have to take acting classes, book alot of local work and build a resume then move to LA if you're going to make it. If someone says its a fraud chances are they were turned down or couldn't pay for their classes.

I have nothing to gain by telling you this. I just hate to see people get ripped off. Very simple. They are the biggest scammers of aspiring young actors in history. The people who told you they are good got taken themselves. No one ever admits a bad decision. They rationalize it. I'm sure if you went through proper channels you could find an acting school. Stay away from JRP.

I go there and love it. I think you should join, but joining doesn't mean you will get famous! And, it's not a fraud but it is quite expensive!

And, FYI I actually wasn't payed to say that. But there's no guarantee that you will become famous with JRP and the chances and very very low, but it's good practice and their acting and modeling classes are good.

if you are not sure of the advice given or are not sure of what the internet is telling you, go to an open house at the school, get some brochures, contact people that go to the school, even go to the headmaster of the school himself, check it out first hand. If it is something you are serious about really do your research. Ive been serious about many things before (what school, what profession) after doing some research I've found that its not what I've really wanted to do anyways...good luck
