In the US, a gross approximation is that 50 to 60 cents of every tax dollar goes to the "good of humanity", while 0.7 cents goes to space exploration. So, ask yourself: will adding an extra 0.7 cents to that 50 to 60 cents really will make that much difference?
Besides, there are benefits to humanity from research in space. Here is one example: vast improvements to imaging software for the Hubble space telescope are now used for medical imaging (MRI, CT, PET) to detect tumors much smaller than could be detected, before.

By learning to live on the moon or Mars, we can learn to live on Earth more effectively because the resources on the moon and Mars are FAR more scarce than they are on Earth. Take for example hydrogen fuel cells that powers some buses and cars. They originated from the Apollo missions because ordinary car batteries would have been too heavy for the lander and orbiter, as well as generated water for drinking. Another reason is that there are space borne hazards that threaten the Earth which includes asteroids, comets and meteors. By traveling through space on an intercept course for these known dangers, then they can use nuclear warheads to alter their course to miss the Earth. And if they come around again, then they can be altered again. And if it appeals to our sense of adventure to explore the final frontier, then what's the problem? And if anyone is out there and they have the capacity of traveling to another star, then it would be a good idea to find out if they're friendly or not and avoid a War of the Worlds.

Oh here we go again. money spent on space travel IS being utilised for the good of humanity. Just because something isn't immediately obviously helpful to you doesn't make it useless.
Hundreds of billions are being spent on welfare and aid programs, compared to a few tens of billions worldwide on space. Space expenditure has driven computer technology, medical technology, given us the ability to monitor and more accurately predict weather, allowed global communication, and generally resulted in a lot of improvements. Still think too much money is wasted on it?

The money spent on spacetravel is a drop in the ocean compared to the money spent on war. Considering the benefits space explorations has given humanity (like electricity through solarpower where people had never had electricity before)what can be considered the better investment? War or space exploration?

Space travel is for the good of humanity. If you think it is not then you are being too short sighted.
Now I ask you if the money spent on sports, art, TV and such things would be better utilized for the good of humanity. Because MUCH more money is spent on those things than on space flight.

Is it possible that space travel may eventually enable humanity to colonise another planet, if this one became inhospitable to humans?
This could be said to be a good use of resources for humanity.

The tiny fraction of money (compared to the billions the US spends on war each year) actually does and will benefit humanity.
It will take time, it won't happen overnight, but its our best hope for long-term survival of the species.
