In China according to the Associated Press, it's not uncommon for at least 10 Chinese Miners to be killed in the mines every day! Think about that! Everyday?! So much for Occupational Safety and Health Administration in China? 6 Miners in Minnesota are dead due to flooding, the Miners in Utah are feared dead as well? My Mother's Father, my Grandfather use to be a coal miner in West Virginia.

He eventually died of lung cancer due to the silica and carbon that's contained in the coal. I remember him telling my Uncles never to work in the coal mines because it's way too dangerous and that eventually they too will develop lung cancer from constantly working the mines. I know in West Virginia, the guys that work in the mines earn way beyond minimum wage. I don't think it's a money thing with the miners as much as it is a "family" thing. My prayers go out to the families that affected by these multiple tragedies.

I myself am a WV girl. Living in a state where the highest paying job for the "working class" is mining, it has a lot to do with the money, but it has a lot to do with family as well. I have friends that work in the mines and their family have done it for generations! When you can bring in a doctors or lawyers salery without the education, it's just common sence to a minor to do just that to support their families. You also have to keep in mind that when men first started working for the mines when they were booming, these men didn't have just one or two children, they had like 8-10! It was a means to feed all of those hungry mouths! Miners have a society all their own full of blood, sweat, tears and LOTS of great stories. You just have to take the time to get to know them :o)

It's all so tragic. I wish they could develop ways of putting tracking devices on all the workers in case of a cave-in, but people say nothing will send a signal through rock that deep. Surely there is something that can be developed in this day of electronic geniuses?

I hope and pray that if they can not get the Utah Miners out alive, which is unlikely at this point, that they can somehow find their bodies so the families can bury them and they are not entombed down in the mine forever. My heart goes out to all effected.

Mining has always been a dangerous job, unfortunately we only see that when people are trapped and die in horrible conditions, however, miners do die anyway because they inhale all sorts of substances and chemicals. I can't believe nobody can come up with a safer way of mining after so many years.
Hopefully these tragic events will help the government take more actions toward improving the current working conditions.

6 miners in Minnesota dead due to flooding? I think you'd better read the news again. 6 people were killed by flash flooding in southeastern Minnesota, but they were not miners, they were just people in their cars who got caught in flash floods due to the recent, very heavy rains over the last weekend.

Not so funny how the only good paying jobs have a death trap built in.
