Well, at first meditation appears to be some kind of special practice in which one can attain all sorts of alternate states or profound absorptions. While this is true, and there can be rapture in meditation, this is not its primary function, nor can any such rapture be maintained indefinitely.
With ongoing practice, you will experience all kinds of things. You will suddenly not know who you are, then you will re-attain the "self" in a slightly modified state. You may see strange sights or feel itching on your body that persists, or you may find yourself reliving past experiences. All of this is natural. It is your old karma (sankharas actually http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sankhara)
It means you are cleaning yourself out and the old "dust" of your mind is surfacing.
As the years pass, you will find that you are in meditation whether you choose to be or not. You will notice now that there is no longer a difference between "you" and the meditation. You will attain huge jumps in progress. Some will be absolutely wonderful, and others will scare you to death.
But you must go on with it because there is no longer a choice in the matter. In the end, meditation will disappear, you will disappear, and you will have realized "essential mind" or "nirvana" or "gedatsu" in Japanese. (Satori ga hiraku).
It is the best thing you can do in this life.

Meditation is a state of deep search of ones own mind!
There are many forms of meditation. There are those who search to empty their minds in an effort to clear their thoughts. Some just find a peaceful corner to ponder deeply into an issue without exterior distraction.
To meditate is to make an effort/exercise to contemplate something. May be contemplation of anything, including emptying the mind (as some like to believe meditation solely is)!!!
PS: Any definition beyond such requires a specification of meditation focus/type/method... eg. Transcendental meditation...etc!

All the world is left brain activity. Closing that side down, temporarily, opens the right side. All meditation is the stilling of the left brain. The benefit is the opening of the right brain, where creative thoughts originate.

Practicing observing the mind/body system through internal reflection, gradually gaining the ability to mentally quiet the body and the thoughts.
Contemplation is the next level in observing the cause/effect relationship between beliefs and reality and ultimately reframing those beliefs in alignment with purpose.
