I was told when reporting the error that the extra $500 would be removed from my account in 2 days. It has been more than a week.

I had a similar thing happen. I returned something to a store and they ran my credit card through 3 times. (dumb clerk). It showed up on my statement 3 times as a credit. I went to the store and explained and tried to pay them (that is what the credit card company said to do). Even the store manager couldn't understand. They said it would show up in a few weeks and give it some time. It has been over 10 years now!!!!!

Never; under the terms and conditions for any bank account they have the right of set off to correct any encoding errors that are made. If you spend the money that isn't yours, when they do make the correction, if it overdraws your account you will be liable not only for bounced check fees, but repaying the amount in full.
