I am a life long resident of Boston (50+ years) and generally speaking the Back Bay area of Boston is loaded with a ton of art galleries on Boylston Street, Newbury Street, the 'Back Bay' and 'South End' in general.

If you go outside of Boston to the city of Cambridge, Newton, or town of Brookline, you might find artist colonies doing their thing there.
