Since then it's been a corporate smorgasbord, tax cuts and breaks, off shore accounts, federal bail outs etc.. Nobody helps out or bails out the poor, the mentally disturbed, the chemically dependant, the broken criminals. How much longer will it take before America takes care of Americans, all Americans, not just the nice wealthy ones? Who will lead? Who would you follow?

Actually Kennedy cut taxes drastically to help the economy. LBJ instituted welfare, which contributes to the current bunch of poor people we have today. Government is increasingly made up of self serving politicians which has been going since the 1960's. There are folks on both sides of the aisle that have been there for what 30 years or more? Look at Ted "Mr Chappaquiddick" Kennedy, he has been in the senate for over 20 years now and has done what? Robert "KKK" Byrd has been in the senate for almost 30 years and is the king of pork. Spector has been the senate for 30 years as well and hasn't done crap. Nixon put the Social Security money into the General Fund in the 70's which gave the congress access to a freaking boatload of money they could spend on their pet projects. Now this supposed fund of "secure" money will be gone in less than 30 years unless something isn't done. However, when President Bush put out his plan for an individual to control part of their own money, the Senior citizens and their lobby went ballistic. The welfare system in this country needs to be totally changed from the mess we have today. If someone decides to try and get a job, their benefits get totally cut off fairly quickly leaving the person stuck in a no win situation. However no one will do anything about it because the Democrats will raise such a stink and yell in one voice "your hurting the poor". Welfare doesn't help people, it enslaves them to count on the Government to take care of them for the rest of their lives. Equally, our tax system is a nightmare of exemptions for only the people who can afford high priced tax experts. Our businesses are going overseas because they are getting taxed into the ground. The federal Government taxes everything at every stage making saving up money impossible. You get taxed when you get your check, taxed on any interest you make from the bank, taxed on retirement funds, and taxed when you die. Our 60,000+ page tax code is broken and yet when people want to cut it down to about 130 pages (Fair Tax Plan), the Democrats and some Republicans shout "but your hurting the poor". They don't realise that the poor contribute a very small percentage of tax income and the middle class and higher actually pay all of the bills. Besides the poor don't get those exemptions the rich folks do because they can't afford those expensive tax attourneys. Also most people don't understand that the rich folks ARE the ones that create jobs. If you look back prior to President Bush's tax cuts how much more money we are getting NOW then before the tax cuts.

A chain is only as strong as its weakest link. The US doesn't seem to care about its weakest links, and only works to reinforce the strongest ones. At some point...and its coming soon....the chain will break - and with the international reputation the US has now, they will not be receiving assistance from too many countries. You cannot spit on others in good times and expect them to help you in the bad times...hopefully, a lesson will be learned. But I suspect not...

Well I hate to inform you that it is too late, but it's too late. The stock market isn't even based on the US economy anymore. We
no longer have a US, but the politicians haven't bothered to tell everyone yet. It's a done deal. The American experiment of government of, for and by the people is over.

corporations dont' want america to have brave, talented leadership with any real vision.

with leaders who actually think for themselves, we might head off in a direction that's good for america but bad for short term corporate profits.

that's why we have the pack of misfits leading us that we currently have...

Kennedy is vastly overrated.

America hands plenty of taxpayers' money out to the poor, etc.

If you want to pay more in taxes, go ahead. they'll take the money.

Or do you just want others to pay more taxes?

PS Kennedy cut taxes also!
