depends on the reason.

and yes it does sometimes takes years.

just please I hope you are one that is disabled because I know too many people that are perfectly fine and collect SSI
And I know people that are disabled and fighting to this day to try to get SSI.

I say they pretty much just give it to you after so long of trying and with the right lawyer the right doc's signature.

Just I don't like people who take advantage of the system.
good luck to you

If you have specific disabilities and they occur prior to you attaining the age of 21 - it could be immediate.

If you are under 21 or near 21 and you were in special education it can happen pretty quickly - under 6 months.

If you have worked some, but not enough to get SSD it is very very hard. You will almost always be automatically refused the first time. Appeal and you might get it the second time. If you don't , try again.

It can take up to a year and I've heard in some cases you have to go back every year or so to appeal your case to make sure you still qualify. That's probably in the more mild cases. Because in most cases, a disabled person is considered qualified, no question.

6 months after a documented cause of disability, or 65 years, whichever comes first.

It varies. For myself; I applied; got tuerned down; I appealed; got turned down (both are almost 'standard procedure' as I understand it. The lawyer for myself won the case, but it took awhile.
Someone we know; applied for it first shot, and actually got it.
