Because of the camels ability to transverse larges tracts of wasteland independently of the environment. The camel transported bulk goods over vast distances while self supplied with food and water in its hump (or humps), so it was deemed the ship of the desert.

Camel is the only animal provided/created by God with feet base so solid and wide that it can travel very easily and naturally on desert sands, without its feet collpsing in the sand dunes. Camel further travels or crosses miles of the desert width without even drinking water in the middle. It can drink water once and can stay without water for more than a month. For human beings it is the best available natural animal transport to cross deserts. Like a ship which takes us across the mighty oceans, camel is the animal which crosses us the mighty deserts, hence aptly called as the ship of the desert.

camel is the only animal in desert that can travel long distances.since it has got a hump on its back that stores fat it doesnt get tired that soon.it has got a good capacity because of that .once you feed it well,it travels without fatigue.
you can not use cars or other vehicles to travel long distances in desert, nor you cant travel alone-in a place full of dus storms&heated sand .since camel has got strong hoof that can resist heat to an extent that is made up of strong and thick layers of skin and bone.this also prevent it from sinking in sand.it also has bis eyelashes that prevents entry of dust.so due to all these reasons camel is called ship of the desert.
when you visit rajasthan try a ride on this wonderful animal throgh the desert.if u wish to have a desert journey.sometime in future.

The camels are able to travel vast distances in desert, drink from waterholes far more bitter or saline for others and eat almost anything, regardless of how tough or how thorny they are. People can even survive on what is in a camel' s stomach. Camels provide milk and fuel as its dry dung can burn readily.
A camel has leathery mouth, tongue and tooth enamel, enabling it to eat thorny desert plants. They can drink 100 litres of water within 10 minutes for future use. They can live without taking in water for 3 or 4 days.
The fur allows excess body temperature to radiate out and protect them from cold nights.
Camels usually travel in heaps to keep cool as the smaller the surface area relative to bulk, the less the heat lost or gained through the surface.
They can sweat to remove heat but the sweat is not seen. They can tolerate 25% weight loss (double the dehydration level in other mammals) without thickening of blood that would cause death in other mammals, as the blood plasma of camels is the last part to lose water.
They have enough tear glands and double rows of long, curled eyelashes to protect their eyes from blowing sand. They can close their noses by contraction of the circular muscle during sandstorms. The broad, padded toes are insulated to avoid the sand' s heat. The strong, flexible web of the toes prevent them from sinking into the sand.

It's not an economics question. As ship only can travel on sea from one country to others and as camels travel on desert form one place to another so camel is compared as the ship of the deserts.Though this thus not have any scientific cause.

A ship goes on water and it can move in any water temperature less than 167 Fahrenheit. It also can go for a long time if one time enough fuel is filled in it.Wheres a camel can also walk in hot sand in sunny days in the deserts. It can also stay for many days without water. So,ship is known as ship of water(even if it doesn't have such name) and a camel is the ship of desert.:)

Camel is called Ship Of Desert because-
Camels are even-toed ungulates in the genus Camelus. The Dromedary or Arabian Camel has a single hump, and the Bactrian Camel has two humps. They are native to the dry and desert areas of western Asia and East Africa, and central and east Asia, respectively. The average life expectancy of a camel is 50 to 60 years. The term camel is also used more broadly to describe any of the six camel-like creatures in the family Camelidae: the two true camels, and the four South American camelids: Llama, Alpaca, Guanaco, and Vicuña.
The name camel comes to English via the Greek κάμηλος (kámēlos) from the Hebrew gamal or Arabic Jamal.
Bactrian camels have two coats: the warm inner coat of down and a rough outer coat which is long and hairy. They shed their fibre in clumps consisting of both coats, which can be gathered and separated. They produce approximately 7 kg (15 lb) of fiber annually. The fibre structure is similar to cashmere wool. The down is usually 2 to 8 cm (1–3 inches) long. While camel down does not felt easily, it may be spun into a yarn for knitting.
A fully-grown adult camel stands 1.85m/6 feet at the shoulder and 2.15m/7 feet at the hump. The hump rises about 30 inches out of its body. Camels can run up to 40mph in short bursts, and sustain speeds of up to 25mph.
Humans first domesticated camels between 3,500–3,000 years ago. The Dromedary and the Bactrian Camel are both still used for milk (which is more nutritious than cow's milk[citation needed]), meat, and as beasts of burden—the Dromedary in western Asia, and the Bactrian Camel further to the north and east in central Asia.

Camals live in the desert and are well adapt to it. For as long as people and camels lived together in the desert, camals have been used to help get through. Camels don't need much water and can carry heavy things. They are used as Ships of the Desert because they are so well made to transverse the desert.
