It's basically saying that since gravity can bend space-time, if they had something to control and concentrate this gravity into a machine, they could bend spacetime into a loop. When traveling around this loop, you'd essentially be able to travel into the past, but the key thing is, you can't travel back any further than when the machine was invented, for the obvious reason that before that the machine would cease to exist.

Its not an unduly new idea. It relies on the fact that gravity can hypothetically curve space time until it loops on itself - hypothetically because these are allowed mathematical solutions of the equations. However, this does not mean they are allowed physical solutions.

I saw one calculation that showed to get the sort of curvature requried you would have to spin a disk with a mass equal to that of our entire galaxy at roughly 100 rpm. This is not practical.

We had a guy that worked in our shop that thought (seriously) that he invented the formula for a time machine. He was asking for monetary backing from the company, etc... come to find out, he was a serious freak! All hopped up on meth and opiates!

I minored in Physics in college so I am able to understand it but not entirely. Modern physics can get pretty confusing so I am not even go to try to simplify what was written in that article
