I'm 31 and play competitive soccer Monday, and Tuesday nights( 1 night indoor and 1 night outdoor) twice a week. I play Goal Keeper. The day after each game I'm sore, and tired. This carries over to Thursday.
When do you decided to call it quits and just move on to some more social type leagues just for fun?
Has anyone had to contemplate this? I would imagine I'm still going to be sore after a social volleyball game though too.

I'm 38 and I'll let you know when I'm done! Twice a week basketball, volleyball and golf. Keep it up, it helps keep you young!

I think it really depends on the person. My dad is 52 and still plays competetive indoor soccer and baseball. He's a goal keeper also and just gets beat up and is pretty much couch ridden the next day. He tried several years ago to do the social sports thing and he couldn't handle it. The fact that people on the team didn't care as much about winning and losing really drove him up the wall - especially since he was still sore and felt just as beat up the next day.. He went back to competitive leagues after that and I'm pretty sure he's going to stay there until he can't walk or is told not to come back by his teammates.

I was 17, and an up-and-comer in local tennis. I was a hot shot. I entered the state championships and drew a 65 year old. I thought that I was an automatic through the first round. Instead, I got my a** handed to me.

Never let a birthday stop you from competing. I'm 29, and I just got 4th in a skateboard race. I hope to still be racing when I'm 60.

I quit the first time at 22. I was a pretty good soccer player and given the chance to play professional. I didn't take it. I liked to party too much, and when I played, I knew I wasn't as good as I could be. I got disgusted with myself and quit. At 28, after I got married, I came back and played semipro. I never was as good as I used too be, but still good enough. I quit at 33. Played for fun many times after that.

i think that at 31 you have to be even more active than 21. May be there is something wrong with your diet or you need nutritional supplements , but i am sure you have to keep play:)
I am 26 an i think and feel in better shape than i was 18 or 20.

With good exercise habits & proper nutrition, there's no reason you ever have to quit. Competitive sports such as tennis, golf, bowling, etc. can be enjoyed throughout your life as long as you maintain proper fitness & are fortunate to enough to avoid any major injuries. You may have to modify your perception of competition, but you don't have to stop competing.

Listen to your Body. I used to and still do, on a limited basis! Keep it going, stay fit.
