you need to read the instructions on the sofa...sometimes you can't use water. but if you don't have it scotch guarded, and you've tested that the color isn't going to run, you could get a carpet cleaner with upholstery attachment and clean it that way.
conversely you can hire like sears or something that does carpet cleaning and they will clean couches as well...
usually though, a really thorough vacuuming is sufficient.

I bought the Bissell Little Green Clean machine. It works on upholstery GREAT. You would not believe the color of the water that comes from the cleaning, even if it doesn't appear to be very dirty.

dissolve borax in boiling water and use that solution in a shampooer. this works with mattresses too and borax kills any "yuckies" living in the upholstery and it naturally deodorizes. be sure to get all the borax out though. it is a natural mineral, but if ingested it can be fatal. http://chemistry.about.com/od/howthingsworkfaqs/a/howboraxworks.htm
