I live in northern NJ.....I say we are "going down the shore".
However, when we are actually at the ocean we say..."we are at the beach".

i'm from michigan and we say beach...could it possible be a usage difference, not a regional difference? like you go to the beach, but the coast guard protects the coast and i have no idea about shore...shore line?

We go to the beach,Panama City Beach,or we go to the Gulf(Gulf of Mexico)
And if we go to the lake we find a place on shore.

Just south of boston here, We call our beaches, well the beach... however we have names for areas of the state, like north shore, southshore, southcoast...
