i.e. is there any gain to a spouse (who's spouse cheated) filing for adultery grounds versus filing for irreconcilable differences?

Basically, no, other than a legal declaration that he/she committed adultery, IF the divorce is granted under that grounds, because remember that you have to prove it.

In IL (and in practically every state with the exception of a few), adultery does not matter--it's not a factor--in the property settlement or child custody issues (unless the adultery had a direct effect on the child, such as Dad/Mom leaving a small child unsupervised while he/she went off to have s*x with their lover). It is also not a consideration when ruling on alimony (which is called ‘maintenance’ in IL).

Talk to a local attorney to verify. Many will give a free initial consultation.

not usually but I only know about NY and I know you will have to prove it. You don't usually gain more in the divorce or anything.

A divorce is a divorce, what are you looking for? Spousal support?
