Usually, the person being perceived as unrealistic does not realize that he or she is unrealistic. It takes intervention on the part of others for that person to be more reasonable in a given environment. However, a general rule of thumb is that when one's emotions are the primary drive of one's behavior rather than reason, it's a sign that such a person would be more prone to be unreasonable.

Normally one doesn't,unless we put ourselves in to the position of those who are affected by it.Alternatively,it can be pointed by somebody else or we realize after a time[with more inputs and rethinking].Being unrealistic is a comparative assessment visa vis a known standard or a yardstick,or an experience and doesn't mean being wrong.

Sometimes you might never know. It may seem right to you, but other people can see that you're being totally unrealistic. I know I can be that way a lot, and not realize it until much later. I've had a couple of failed relationships due to that!!

When you have to ask "how does one know when one is being unrealistic?".
If you have to ask, then you are being unrealistic.

Ask yourself if it is a reasonably achievable goal and if most people would and could be able and willing to do it.
