Tampons or no swimming.
Get the slenderest plastic applicator tampon and give it a go. Read the instructions and RELAX.
It will take some time so don't be frustrated. I've been using tampons for 22 years and it took forever for me to put one in for the first time.
Your period WILL NOT STOP or slow down in the water. The blood gets dispersed before you see anything in the water. Please do not go in the water without protection (tampons!)!

If it was your first ever period I would talk it over with your mom. The only way that you can go swimming, is by using tampons or menstrual cups. Tampons go in the vagina and soak up the flow, and you have to change them every so often. Menstrual cups go in the vagina and collect the flow, you have to empty them out every so often, and you can get either re-usable cups or disposable. Never go in the water without a tampon/menstrual cup on for sanitary reasons, and pads will absorb the water instead of blood. Pay no attention to people who say that your period will stop in the water because it DOESN'T! My friend had to learn that the hard way...how would you feel if you went swimming and someone was on their period and wasn't wearing a tampon/menstrual cup? I would feel GROSS!
Hope this helps and good luck xo
P.S. Never let your period get in the way of your life!
P.P.S. I've collected a few links for you below that should be quite useful for you.

Use a tampon or a menstrual cup so you don't contaminate the water. You cannot go swimming while wearing a pad because it will retain the water and become pointless.
Don't listen to the people telling you that your period stops in the water - it doesn't! It only washes the blood away into the water and when you come out of the water you'll be the one embarassed because you'll have blood running down your leg. Best of luck!

Simple, wear a tampon. They are very easy to use. :) Start off with the slender type, and you're good to go.
Once and for all... bathing does NOT stop the flow of your period. That is a myth. I'm 39 years old, my period never lightened up or stopped b/c of swimming, bathing, or showering.
"Another glaring misconception is that women should not bathe during their entire period — an age old theory handed down to women by their mothers or other elderly women. Perhaps women believed that bathing disrupted the menstrual flow but this is entirely untrue. “Bathing does not affect the menstrual period at all and causes no harm. It should be encouraged,” said Dr Sadiqua Jaffery, Professor of Gynaecology at the Ziauddin Hospital. It is imperative that women use clean sanitary pads and keep themselves clean."

You don't have to use a tampon.(unless your really worried) But whenever your whole body temperature changes the bleeding will stop...like when you take a shower, bath, or swim. Just make sure you use something when you get out of the pool cause it will start again (usually not for like 5-8 minutes)
Don't use a pad you'll get extremely embarrassed. It's just gonna soak up all the water and be very uncomfortable.

Use a TAMPON.
Your period DOES NOT stop (or slow down) when you are in the water. The water just washes away the blood.

When you go into the water your period slows and you shouldn't bleed at all. But where a tampon when you go in just in case and so that for teh few minutes when you go out and in, it doesn't go through. Hope this helps and have fun swimming!

i had the same problem
i asked that on here and they all say use a tampon but it was VERY uncomfortabe and everyone said that if you wear a pad u will be embarressed. but i used a pad and nothing happened.
so you could use a pad but wear the bottoms with a skirt "built in" cuz it kinda looks like a diaper and if you have a bikini one on it will show.
so wear one with a skirt!
hope i helped
