I am 6 months along and really want to rescue a kitten. It would be indoors & I would have a litter box.

Is this a totally bad idea? my old cat died at the ripe age of 16 a month before I got pregnant,so I have been missing my kitty lovin'!

Yes, I would love to have an adult cat,but my hubby has 4 dogs ( who are sweet as pie to cats) and it seems a lot of adult cats just are not into sharing their mom & house with that many dogs :o)

The dogs are great, but there is just something about a cat.....

if you really want a cat, and have no one to scoop for you, get an automatic litter box. They are awesome!!!!! And I'm glad you want to rescue a cat instead of spending money on a "designer" cat.

The problem with cats is 2 fold. The first being that you cannot go near that litter box as long as you are pregnant. You can get toxemia that way and that is just bad news all around. The second part comes when the baby is born. While rare there is a chance that the kitty will smell the milk on the baby and try to lick it off and end up smothering the baby. That is what I was told with my babies anyway. As much as I love kitties I ended up giving it to my best friend when my son came around and will get another one once my next baby is over a year old. Better safe than sorry when it comes to a baby imo. Congratulations on your baby!

No... But you can not change the litter box. something in the litter is toxic to pregnant women. Do not let the cat scratch you either or bite you. I think its a great thing rescueing a kitten or anything for that matter. But you may want to hold off until your baby is born. But if this is the cat for you go ahead and do it just be safe about it! Good luck

There are no problems with having a cat or kitten. The only thing is that if you can get someone else to change the litter box then you are good. If you have to change it then make sure you have a mask over your nose and mouth and wear gloves. It's the toxin in the cat feces that is bad for pregnant women.
Sorry bout old kitty and congrats on new kitty!!

As long as it's a healthy kitty w/ all it's shots and you don't have to change the litter box yourself. Have someone else help you out until baby gets here, use rubber gloves and wash thoroughly or splurge on one of those litter boxes that cleans itself and all you have to do is throw out the collection containers. The main danger is a type of bacteria found in the feces that can cross the placenta and cause all sorts of problems for baby, I just can't remember the name. Good luck!

Its not bad to have a cat..its bad to change the litter box. YOU CANNOT CHANGE IT!!! You must have someone do it for you. There might be a point in your pregnancy where you will feel sick from the cat's litter box you might want it to be an outside cat instead of inside trained.... But other then that cats are fine to have.

Yeah, it's a bad idea to rescue a kitten right before you have a baby. You have enough stuff to worry about and you'll soon be getting plenty of loving from your baby.
Between the harmful effects of litter boxes on your system, while pregnant, and the cat mentality when a new baby is brought home, it just isn't a good idea to get one now. Wait until the baby is about 1-2 and then bring home a kitten. That way your child learns about kittens and enjoys it. Also, a 2 year old can't be smothered by a kitten. And the baby was there first, so you don't have any of that alpha-animal cr*p.

i don't think the cat itself as of right now is terrible...you're not supposed to handle the litter and the cat's bm's. my friend is pregnant (going to have her baby thursday!) and she has a cat....but they have made a special room for the cat and have started putting the cat in her "room" at night and locking her in. i would be most worried about the cat sitting on the baby and suffocating it.....because they look for something warm to cuddle up to, and they could kill you baby once it gets here. so no, having a cat isn't bad, just don't handle the litter and lock it in a room at night esp, and keep a special eye on the two of them.

It's fine to have a kitten or cat while pregnant as long as YOU DON'T clean the litter box.
