Today it would be Johan Santana and Bobby Jenks. Active pitchers with best careers: Clemens and Rivera. Best Seasons: Brad Penny/John Lackey/Josh Beckett and JJ Putz

I don't care what anyone says, Santana is the best pitcher alive right now. If he could have some run support he would have 15-16 wins. He had to strikeout 17 and pitch 8 innings to win 1-0. A man shouldn't have to do that much to get the win.
For RP Putz has insane stats this year.

SP - I would say a tie between Johan Santana and Brandon Webb. Webb is after Hershiser's consecutive scoreless innings streak and Santana fanned 17 batters the other night.

RP - I would say its J.J. Putz with the Mariners. The guy's ERA is only 1.40 and he leads the American League in saves. Oh yeah, his WHIP (walks/hits per innings pitched) is a mere .069 with a batting average against of .144. Can't get much better than that.

At the moment of typing, the best pitcher is probably Brandon Webb, because of his 3 shutout victories and 40+ scoreless innings.

Overall this season, Josh Beckett, no question.

Overall this season the best RP is Hideki Okajima

As of most recent leading up to today I would have to say Brandon Webb of the Diamondbacks. His 42 scoreless innings in a row speaks for it self.

As for relief pitcher I would have to say Hideki Okajima of the Red Sox. The guy has been money all year long.
