I don't want a bunch of PETA bandwagoneers on my case for this one, just read the question and think about it!! Please.
Our laws are pretty messed up. We have a referee looking at 25 years for game fixing. Fixing a freaking basketball game/games!! A GAME. When murderers, Child molesters, repeat drunk drivers, theaves, robbers, etc. get a lot less than that?
Yes, I'm mentioning Michael Vick! He is looking at up to 5 years(he won't get that, but still) He will serve time in prison whether it be 1 year or 3 years, for gambling on dogfights and sponsering illegal acts. Huh? Let's not tell anyone about the "illegal act" our own government is doing as we speak! Give me a break, when is our judicial system really going to start working?

I agree with you. It is totally screwed up. I don't know if it will ever work the way it should, there are too many people in government who don't have a clue.

First, professional sports are BILLION (perhaps even TRILLION) dollar industries. If one team gets in the playoffs over another, that city's economy is boosted by MILLIONS. Players make MILLIONS more. Advertisers spend or not depending upon who's in the playoffs.
Second, professional sports relies upon their legitamacy for their audience. If everyone believes that the sports are fixed, no one will care to follow a team, they just would watch for pure entertainment. Everything goes downhill fast.
Third, "looking at 25 years" is just the STATUTORY MAXIMUM punishment that the ref could get, but won't under the federal sentencing guidelines. The media like to use the 25 years mark because it's dramatic and they're too lazy to figure the likely sentence. My guess is that he will get not very much time.
Thieves maybe steal $50,000 from a bank. This guy may have affected millions of dollars worth of commerce. Just because you don't see the cash in his hand doesn't mean it didn't cause harm.
Fourth, it's not just game fixing, it's gambling. This type of gambling implicates organized crime, something the government has been fighting for centuries.
Fifth, our judicial system IS working. If you're a felon in possession of a firearm and charged in the federal system, you pretty much get 5 years. If you're a drug dealer with any quantity, EXPECT 20 years in the federal system (remember, both of the people you mentioned were charged in federal court... sentences are much higher because the number of crimes they can charge are much lower)
Just get some perspective. Merely because these cases are the ones that make ESPN doesn't mean that you get the whole idea of how federal prosecution works.

The system is advesarial and that is supposed to make the players feel like they got a fair shake, or to give the appearance of justice. Does it work all the time? No. Is it the best we've got? Yes.
Perhaps Vick is being made an example of....so anyone thinking of doing what he did might think again.
Just so you know, murderers who get caught and prosecuted don't usually get less than five years, in some states depending on the circumstances of the case they get the death penalty.
Sometimes it sucks to be a celeb, what you do wrong can and will come back to bite you on the butt....Vick is proof of this no?

You're downplaying what Vick is accused of and apparently is admitting to. He didn't just gamble on dogfighting. He's accused of financing the entire operation and personally drowning dogs that weren't cut out for fighting. He is pleading guilty. That's not the same as gambling. The NBA ref thing is overblown, I'll give you that. But let's not get ahead of ourselves...he's not gonna get 25 years. That's just not realistic. If you don't believe me, just wait and see. I don't really know what your point is, but Vick didn't just throw down some bets at a dogfight.

We don't seem to have much influence on government. I would think that if we vote for third party candidates that would let them know what we want and what we will back with action. They usually respond when they see they are losing us. Why do people complain and do nothing? It's so easy to get a free website, free domain name and have a citizens forum on issues and to vote on them. If we get enough support for an issue politicians will thank us for helping with their homework. Meanwhile I find we can do so much with ourselves, I tried to get active and learned that it's a full time job just getting me up to speed, that takes a great deal of effort alone. If everyone did that and we had the equivalent knowledge of a doctorate, citizens can make a government as the first citizens did and without violence. We have to insist on fairness, or we won't get it. Being organized we can use each others skills to take the steps that can make a difference. Once you get one decision overturned then self policing sets in and the whole mood of the country seems to change. I think that, though was to be a warning, He may yet get off, especially if we contact our congressmen, but there are sure bigger fish to fry.

In this case it HAS started working. You may not want to hear this, but what Vick did, he did over many states which is why the FEDS are involved.
I agree with you that our government partakes in "illegal acts" but it would take an act of congress to get anything to happen...and I don't see that happening currently.

I'm wondering why there has been no charge for animal cruelty. There's been plenty of testimony to the fact that he killed and mistreated animals.
But to answer your question... No!
The system has never nor will it ever be fair. Politicians, Judges and our Lawmakers live by two sets of rules. The dividing line is measured in dollars.
