Lost Oil Cap

The engine was probably out of oil and starting to overheat and seize up. If you are lucky, you can just fill it up with oil and it should be okay. For a temporary oil cap, cover the opening with duct tape and put a large rubber band (like from broccoli) around the base. Make sure to check your oil level often to make sure no more is leaking out or there isn't another problem with the engine.

Hard to say although what you're describing is troubling. Compare an engine to the human body: oil is like blood, the oil filter kidneys, the oil pump the heart, the oil pan to the liver. Losing oil is like bleeding, the body can heal itself but a car's engine can't. You lose enough blood and you will die, same thing for an engine although it doesn't take much lost oil to seriously damage an engine. Hopefully you aren't still driving it without the cap...

Wholly cow! Never plug off any automotive part with aluminum foil. Motor vibrations pressure and vacuum pulsations will eventually cause aluminum foil to work harden and fail. If a piece is consumed into the crankcase it could be a nasty situation. Duck-Tape a piece of terry cloth towel outside the opening or very carefully fold a corner in the opening if there is a built in baffle. If you see rocker arms, valve springs and moving parts it's best not to arbitrarily stuff a rag in the opening.
