The big irony here is that this isnt true anymore. People come to this country and dont "melt" in anymore. Instead, they have their own "pride" for their native country and form pockets within the walls of the US. This inherently creates diversity and sympathy for the less fortunate in other countries. Subsequently, these people get voted into American office and then apply laws to dictate their own personal views.

What do you think?

I've said it before, people come to America because they feel they will have a better life; you come to America, you become an American and embrace and stand behind what is American. And also, to the non-believers of Christ, this country was founded on "one nation under God" and without Him, we could not stand. It is true; God Blesses America!
Thanks for a great question!

agreed
40 years ago if you came to this country you was expected to naturalize and become an American and with that i mean you just didnt get the citizenship and still say you was a Scot or Irishman or French you became America cause it was a country of fresh start a new beginning
now we pity the sub cultures and give them the ability to say im a Frenchman but only living in America or im a Mexican but only living in America
before long we will watch the American way of life turn into a bunch of city-states that has its own identity and laws and soon there will Not be a United States
remember the Roman Empire did the same thing and you seen what happened to it

Calling America the Big Melting Pot is more of a reference to the way it deals with immigrants as opposed to other countries like Canada. To become an American they expect you to learn English, learn the culture, and assimilate to the "American way". This, of course, isn't always the way things are done, but compared to other countries it is. There is an American culture, although if you live in it, it's probably harder to identify. Canada's way of welcoming immigrants is quite a bit different. It's not as strict and supports people maintaining their culture more than the US. They refer to Canada as being the salad bowl because of how much MORE it allows diversity.

Partly true.No body dictates in a democracy. The hidden fact is that Natives [Americans] themselves are becoming less and less interested in their own civic affairs. When others take on the mantle to do it for them, they don't like that either and find faults. Sorry, such people don't get voted in to any offices unless they prove to be many times better than natives.Trust the voters of the largest and fully functional democracy in the world. let's not talk of sympathy for less fortunates. It has nothing to do with the issue directly.Suggest you please think again.

The word nation means "a family grown large", it's where the word 'nationality' comes from. When any nation tries to diversify, it falls into ruin for some of the reasons you stated.

America was never intended as a "melting pot" for any non-christian people. Families speak the same language, have the same customs, and religion. When non-family members are introduced into the mix, nothing good can come from it.

first of all, why wouldn't we be sympathetic towards the less fortunate in other countries? are we supposed to brag because we have food to eat and they don't? because we have running water and they don't? plus, the idea of a melting pot is that all races and people come together in different ways in the same place. it doesn't mean that people come to America, abandon who they are, and become robots to some singular idea or way of living.
you want to have so much pride for the US, yet people, just because they move, aren't allowed to have pride for where they came from? where are your ancestors from? I'm guessing they were immigrants too.
and so far, it has been mostly rich, white, power hungry christian men who have been using their place in office to dictate their personal views.
i think you need to deal with some racist and bigotry and intolerance issues.

I think you have a very valid point not only in America but in other countries such as Britain. This destroys a countries unity and pride in belonging to that country making it a satellite base for working in by different nationalities. The eventual outcome could however be that we all end up as members of one country----earth---but not in my time

True. And here's an interesting read:
http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/c4ac4a74-570f-11db-9110-0000779e2340.html

"A bleak picture of the corrosive effects of ethnic diversity has been revealed in research by Harvard University’s Robert Putnam, one of the world’s most influential political scientists.

His research shows that the more diverse a community is, the less likely its inhabitants are to trust anyone – from their next-door neighbour to the mayor."

Melt means to become part of...so many immigrents today, it's true as you say, wish to continue to maintain the culture that they came from. They should strive to become like other Americans, learn the language, customs, obey laws and apply for citizenship. My grandparents came here from Italy and quickly learned our language and became citizens.

i agree with you . immigrants leave their country come here and then wave their native countries flag everywhere, refuse to learn english, or embrace american culture in anyway. they should have stayed in their country if it was soooo great. whatever though cause in a generation or two they become assimilated. when kids are born and raised here theyre usually pretty american and their kids will be even more so.
