That is the reason that Chavez closed a TV station in Venezuela. RCTV actively participated in trying to overthrow a democratically elected leader. In countries like Britain there are broadcasting laws and such an action by the BBC for instance would breach these laws. So what if CNN called for the overthrow of the democratically elected President?
The Western media makes out that this action is an attempt by Chavez to silence opposition voices which frankly is bu11sh1t. If that was the case there would be no opposition party in Venezuela. There is, Coordinadora Democratica, and they have policies for any post Chavez era.
The US claimed that Chavez had brought in a law that restricted the freedom of the press. In reality the law entitled Law on the Responsibility of Radio and Television did nothing more than regulate sexual and violent content and legislates against slander of BOTH public officials and private citizens. Exactly what other countries like the US and UK have.

Just to clarify, calling for impeachment is something completely different to calling for someone to be overthrown.

Arrested all at CNN would be. No different is the U.S. on this point. Believe it not you can. Stand on the Mall in Washington D.C. and call for the overthrow of Bush and you will see.
Not long before you are arrested it will be.

"If CNN actively called for the overthrow of Bush would the US people want it shut down?"
Nope, but the Government might for trying create an insurrection! There are LAWS and Broadcast Companies have to abide by those LAWS! Not just the ones "John Q. Public" know readily but those created by the FCC!

In the US, we have (still) several networks and lots of cable channels, as well as other forms of media. So nobody would call to shut down CNN. But you confounded the question by bringing Chavez into it. He probably is trying to silence his opposition.

If CNN went as far as to officially suggest that American policy in the Middle East might be somewhat flawed, they'd be hauled off to a 'black site' quicker than you can say Patriot Act.

The only people who watch CNN are avid liberals who probably enjoy the thought, even if they know such a thing would not be legally, or ethically the correct thing to do. Since the only people who watch would not be outraged, rating would not drop below the woe full levels they are already at, and life would go on as usual.

Yeah, Hugo Chavez is a wonderful man. Let's celebrate him.
He has, after all, come a LONG way from the days of screaming out, "Da plane!" on the hit 70's show Fantasy Island.

Thanks for the clarification. Many television correspondents call for the overthrow or impeachment of our President . . . It's not uncommon on American television or radio . . . I think it's primarily a cultural difference.

No, I don't think the people would want CNN shut down, I think Bush would want CNN shut down.
