I am going to replace an existing A/C system. One of the estimates received specifies a single unit for 1st and 2nd floor.
My current A/C is 2 separate systems, a separate air handler and condenser for bottom floor and second floor.

Definitely go for the two units. You'll never be able to regulate the temperature between the two floors if you don't. We had a house a few years ago that was 2 stories, open staircase. It was impossible to be comfortable in both areas.

I would keep the 2 units, but I would only replace the one that is bad. You can keep the same air handlers. You probably have 2 seperate duct system as well. You don't want to spend all of that money to tie the 2 duct systems together.

Go with the 2 systems.

You can buy a single outside unit supplying both a downstairs internal and an upstairs internal ~~
