Brown is old blood, you are pregnant and thus far everything is okay.

Sometimes you can get a 'leftover' period when you are in the very early stages of pregnancy. Usually just brown spotting for a day or two. This is what happened to me shortly after I found out I was pregnant. And five years on I have a beautiful healthy daughter that drives me nuts sometimes!
When I had my ultrasound, it was so early the technician called someone else in (just because she was inexperienced which made me panic) and they did an internal ultrasound which showed an incredibly tiny sac which was nearly impossible for them to see, but it was there. I was 5wks at that point. If they can't see anything you could just be too early to tell on a scan so wait two weeks if you are still pregnant according to the HPT then go back and ask for another scan to clarify it for you.

Good luck and congrats

They probably ordered the ultrasound to find out how far along you are, and I'm guessing you aren't far along enough to see a baby with a heartbeat on an ultrasound. At 4 weeks (gestational time) I saw only the gestational sac. At six weeks I saw the baby and the heartbeat. I'm sure they'll have you come back for another ultrasound to check progress. Congratulations and best of luck.

Edit: Contrary to what the above poster said, spotting is COMMON and usually normal in early pregnancy. It can be caused by implantation, or can result from your body simply adjusting to the pregnancy and not having a cycle. Heavy bleeding with cramps is not normal and should be evaluated by a doctor. Again, good luck.

There is nothing wrong, the spotting is probably do to implantation. If your still in that phase of the pregnancy there is nothing to see in an ultra sound. Wait about 6 more weeks and then there will be something to see. Congrats and don't worry about it.

I just had almost the same thing happen. I was less than 5 weeks judging by my lmp and I had an ultrasound done. It was too early, and spotting can be normal. I would ask for a quantitive hcg test , I went for mine this week. Do not stress, it is not good for you. Most ob/gyns do not see people until after 8 weeks. Mine told me that most of the time you cannot see it on an ultrasound until at least 7 weeks.

You are pregnant! Congratulations! If you just found out, you may not be that far along and possibly they couldn't find anything yet! Don't get too worked up yet. I didn't get an ultrasound at the docs. until 12 weeks pregnant, and I think for that reason specifically. Don't worry. Spotting is normal, implantation of the embryo or zygote or BABY!

if the pregnancy test is positive, but there's nothing on the ultrasound, AND ur spotting brown....I would almost guarantee the pregnancy is ectopic (tubal pregnancy) http://www.webmd.com/baby/guide/pregnancy-ectopic-pregnancy

Didnt they tell u anything at the ultrasound appointment about what the possible problems could be?

I would be watching for sharp pain on one side or the other and any bleeding. That would mean the pregnancy ruptured.

I hate to be the bearer of POSSIBLE bad news, but this is what it sounds like to me.

It is probably too early to see anything. You really can't see the yolk sac until after eight weeks, I think, but don't quote me. Brown spotting is alright, it could just be from your exam.

It's probably too early to see anything. The blood was probably implantation bleeding, mine was a slight brown discharge too.

Congratulations!
